Kisumu County has hired 665 early childhood development education (ECDE) teachers on permanent and pensionable contracts.

Governor Anyang Nyong’o stated that the teachers were hired on a contract basis from the seven sub-counties.

On Friday, Nyong’o presided over the distribution of permanent and pensionable service letters to teachers at the County Public Service Board office.

He praised the teachers for their dedication to providing academic nourishment to the students.

“As a reward for the good job they have done to our children, my Cabinet has decided to put all of them on permanent and pensionable terms,” Nyong’o said.

We have done this to motivate and enable the teachers to plan well as they realize their career development. You will no longer be worried about the renewal of your contracts.”

Teachers can now obtain loans for personal development because they are creditworthy.

Nyong’o stated that the employment was carried out in strict accordance with labor laws and all relevant legal statutes.

This, he said, was also consistent with ECDE sector Council of Governors (COG) resolutions.

Kisumu, according to Nyong’o, joins Busia, Nyandarua, Nakuru, and Bungoma counties in having ECD teachers on permanent and pensionable contracts.

He emphasized that the management of Pre-Primary Education in Kenya is delegated to the county government, as stated in the Fourth Schedule of the Kenyan Constitution of 2010.

ECDE Act 2021, in its entirety, outlines the County Governments’ involvement in terms of health and rights to Early Childhood.

Kisumu County has 684 ECDE centers, 627 of which are anchored in primary schools and 57 of which are stand-alone public ECDE centers.

There are 52,818 children enrolled in public ECDE centers, with 26,003 girls and 26,815 boys.

Nyong’o stated that his government has taken numerous steps to develop the sector and ensure that foundational education is deeply embedded.

The intervention aims to improve their school learning performance through increased enrollment, retention, completion rate, and 100% transition.
